Nasal Turbinate Surgery
What are nasal conchae/turbinates?
The nasal conchae (turbinates) are protrusions located on either side of the nasal
septum in each nostril. They guide the air entering the nose to the desired path
so that it flows properly and is filtered before it enters the body.
What problems may occur with nasal conchae/turbinates?
When the conchae become enlarged, they cause nasal blockage or congestion.
Nasal congestion is often aggravated when the patient lies down, which
increases blood flow to the conchae. This may make it difficult to breath during
sleep.
When conservative treatments such as medication do not help, the patient may
undergo nasal concha surgery. The decision for surgery type depends on the
concha size, the intensity of the breathing disorder, and the extent of the
symptoms.
About nasal concha surgery/Nasal turbinate surgery
The surgery can be performed using three methods:
-
“Burning” via electric current
-
Partial resection (removal)
-
Complete resection of a concha or several conchae
All three approaches focus on the problematic areas and work to preserve the
remaining functional structure of the conchae.
