FESS: Functional endoscopic sinus surgery
Minimally invasive functional endoscopic sinus surgery is a safe and highly
effective procedure, which shortens patient hospitalization time and reduces
side effects after surgery.
Patients who may need FESS
FESS is a common surgery that Assuta surgeons use to treat sinusitis and
inflammatory diseases of the sinuses.Patients mainly undergo FESS when they
have chronic sinusitis (prolonged inflammation of the sinuses) with or without
polyps, but conservative treatment has been unsuccessful.
How is FESS surgery performed?
The surgery is performed by endoscopy, that is, with the help of a thin optical
tube inserted through the nostrils. The image captured from the endoscope is
displayed on a screen so the surgeon can see the nasal structures and perform
the delicate surgery internally, without external incisions.
During the operation, the sinus openings are dilated and the sources of the
inflammation (such as polyps) and/or infection are removed. The surgeon
performs a type of “interior design” of the nasal cavities and sinuses to improve
ventilation and function of the sinuses.
Sometimes the nasal septum is straightened and the nasal conchae (filters) are
reduced. These procedures do not change the shape of the nose. In most
patients, no internal nasal bandages are needed.
