Bariatric Endoscopy
This groundbreaking technique performed at Assuta provides a quality alternative for patients to lose weight without surgery.
The procedure, performed through the mouth, narrows the stomach to a sleeve shape,
which can hold less food. Hence, it is also called endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG).
The results are similar to those of bariatric surgery – producing satiety with reduced food consumption.
How gastric endoscopy works
The gastroenterologist inserts a flexible tube containing a special surgical “sewing machine”
through the mouth into the patient's stomach.
The device then sections off and stitches up a part of the stomach that will no longer be used.
A tiny video camera is also inserted into the stomach, so the gastroenterologist can view the procedure in real time.
Gastric endoscopy advantages
-
Unlike surgery, which can cause side effects and complications,
bariatric endoscopy is a less complicated operation with reduced risks. -
Recovery from the procedure is simpler than other procedures.
It usually requires only one day of hospitalization and a few days of monitoring. -
Bariatric endoscopy is a good solution for patients whose gastric bypass
was unsuccessful or caused problematic side effects.
Gastric endoscopy disadvantages
-
For a short period after the procedure, patients need to eat soft,
liquid foods to prevent opening the stitches.
